Undersea Cable Cuts off Abidjan Coast Disrupts Connectivity Across Ghana and West African Subregion — MTN

MTN Ghana has addressed its customers concerning the ongoing connectivity issues they are facing. In a statement released on Saturday,June 27,2026 MTN Ghana revealed that the ongoing connectivity issues are as a result of undersea cable cuts off the coast of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. “MTN Ghana would like to inform our customers that undersea cable cuts off the coast of Abidjan, Côre d’Ivoire are affecting connectivity and internet services in Ghana and some countries in the subregion.” the statement read MTN Ghana added that the ongoing challenge is not only affecting its Ghanaian customer base but also affecting some countries within the subregion. The company however stated that is actively engaging its international stakeholders to find a solution to the problem. “We are actively engaging our international partners to resolve the issue as soon as possible.” the statement added The company then apologized for all inconveniences caused and expressed its commitment to ensuring the best experience for its customers. MTN Ghana is currently the largest telecommunications network in Ghana, leading the market across mobile voice, data, and mobile financial services. Headquartered in Accra, the company is celebrating its 30th anniversary of operations in the country.

Telecel Ghana Opens Kasoa Retail Shop, Eyes Deeper Reach into Peri-Urban Markets

Digital and Communications Service Provider, Telecel Ghana has opened a new Retail Shop in Kasoa as part of its efforts to improve customer experience. The telecommunications company explained that this forms part of its aims to expand its services and bring them closer to their customers hence making them more accessible. The company in a post on X announced that the “milestone reflects our commitment to bringing seamless connectivity and a premium, customer-focused experience right to your doorstep.” Telecel Ghana added that its new shop in Kasoa will offer services ranging from broadband to device support and Telecel Cash services. Telecel added that the new outlet is located at MIC Plaza, near the Royalhouse Chapel. The opening of Telecel Ghana’s Kasoa outlet signals a broader push by the company to deepen its footprint in Ghana’s rapidly expanding peri-urban markets. As competition in the telecoms sector intensifies, the move reflects a growing recognition that customer proximity not just network coverage is becoming a key battleground for telcos seeking to retain and grow their subscriber base.

MTN Ghana Names Esi Mimirba Wilson as Chief Human Resource Officer

MTN Ghana has announced the appointment of Esi Mimirba Wilson as its Chief Human Resource Officer, effective 15 April 2026. In a statement released on April 23rd,2026 the telecommunications giant announced the appointment aligns with its Ambition 2030 strategy and aims its strengthening and improving its human resource. Prior to her appointment, Esi Mimirba Wilson served as the Director, People and Transformation at Consolidated Bank Ghana and brings on board over 23 years of experience across different industries. Esi holds an MBA in Human Resource Management from the University of Ghana and a BA (Hons) in Publishing Studies from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. She is also an Associate Member of CIPD, a Certified Change Practitioner, and an Agile HR Certified Practitioner, as well as a Chartered Banker and a Certified Retail Banker. In her new role, Esi will be responsible for leading MTN Ghana’s human capital strategy, talent development, organisational effectiveness and culture transformation agenda, ensuring the company continues to attract, develop and retain the right capabilities to drive sustainable growth and superior customer experience. Commenting on the appointment,the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, stated that Esi’s expertise makes her the right fit for the job “Esi brings a wealth of experience in leading complex people transformations and building high-performing organisations. Her strong leadership, deep expertise in change management and passion for people development make her well-positioned to lead MTN Ghana’s human resource function as we continue to execute our Ambition 2030 strategy.” Blewett said Esi Mimirba Wilson replaces Amma Benneh-Amponsah who served as Chief Human Resource Officer for MTN for the past 24 years. MTN GH Sweeps 3 Ookla Speedtest Awards, Records Connectivity Score Of 67.16

MTN Ghana has been awarded the fastest mobile network in Ghana and the best fixed network in both Ghana and Western Africa, clinching three Ookla Speedtest Awards at the just ended Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. The telecommunication giant in Ghana was recognized as the Fastest Mobile Network in Ghana, Best Fixed Network in Ghana, and Best Fixed Network in Western Africa with a Speedtest Connectivity Score of 67.16. Commenting on the recognition, MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett stated the awards reflect the company’s sustained investment drive to improve customer experience. “These recognitions from Ookla reflect the significant investments we continue to make in our network to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity for our customers. At MTN Ghana, we believe that a strong, dependable network is fundamental to expanding digital access, driving economic growth and supporting Africa’s progress,” Blewett said. The CEO also added that the company is ramping up network site deployments to improve quality of service for customers. The Speedtest Awards is an award scheme among the telecommunications industry that honors credible performance, evaluates operators on speed, coverage, consistency, and assess overall user experience entirely through real customer testing.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

MTN Ghana Completes Structural Separation of Mobile Money Business

MTN Ghana has completed the structural separation of its mobile money business, following the satisfaction or waiver of all conditions precedent and receipt of the required regulatory approvals. In a statement issued, the telecommunications giant explained that the separation was driven by the company’s strategic objective to scale its fintech operations and comply with the localization requirements of the Payment Systems and Services Act, 2019 (Act 987) with the transaction becoming effective on March 31, 2026. The transaction involved the statutory merger of MobileMoney Ltd., the former operator of the mobile money business, with MobileMoney Fintech Ltd. (MMFL), a newly incorporated entity established under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) to take over operations of the mobile money business. The statement added that no new shares were issued by MTN Ghana as part of the transaction, and the company’s shareholding structure remains unchanged. MTN Ghana continues to operate its core telecommunications business. Going forward, the mobile money business will be operated exclusively by MobileMoney Fintech Ltd. Speaking on the development, MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett said the milestone reflects the company’s commitment to driving innovation and strengthening digital infrastructure. “The structural separation positions us to scale our fintech ambitions while continuing to invest in Ghana’s digital future,” he added. Also speaking, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Ltd. Shaibu Haruna,described the transition as a new chapter in the company’s mission to deepen financial inclusion. “We remain committed to empowering individuals and businesses across Ghana with reliable, innovative fintech solutions,” he said. The separation is expected to position both businesses to operate with greater strategic focus, while maintaining full regulatory compliance and enhancing long-term value creation for stakeholders.

MTN Ghana Delivers Strong Revenue Growth, Declares GHS6.4bn Dividend at 2026 AGM

MTN Ghana has reported a strong financial performance for the 2025 financial year, posting a 36.1% year-on-year growth in total revenue, as the company reinforces its position as a key driver of Ghana’s digital and economic transformation. The telecommunications giant recorded a 43.5% increase in EBITDA, with margins improving from 57.1% to 60.1%, while profit after tax surged by 55.9%. Speaking at the company’s eighth Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Board Chairman Dr. Ishmael Yamson attributed the strong performance to heightened customer engagement and strategic expansion across data, mobile money, digital and voice services. He also credited a favourable macroeconomic environment, pointing to Ghana’s notable economic recovery throughout 2025. “Inflation dropped significantly from 23.8% to 5.4%, while the Ghana cedi strengthened against the US dollar, driven by effective policy measures and robust gold exports,” Dr. Yamson noted, adding that increased investment in artificial intelligence provided continued optimism for future productivity gains. Building on its robust financial performance, the Board proposed a final dividend of 0.40 pesewas per share and an interim dividend of 0.08 pesewas per share, bringing the total payout for 2025 to 0.48 pesewas per share,a 57.4% increase over 2024. The total distribution amounts to GHS6.4 billion, representing 81% of profit after tax. Shareholders at the AGM approved the final dividend, with payout scheduled for April 10, 2026. Beyond its financials, MTN Ghana advanced its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda in 2025, sourcing approximately 50% of its energy from solar and reducing carbon emissions. Female representation in the workforce surpassed 43%, reflecting the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Through the MTN Ghana Foundation, the company sustained support for education, health and economic empowerment initiatives. MTN also made substantial contributions to government revenue, paying GHS10.5 billion in taxes and GHS1.3 billion in fees and levies. Looking ahead, Dr. Yamson acknowledged emerging global risks, including geopolitical tensions and rising oil prices that could weigh on inflation and currency stability. He nonetheless expressed optimism about Ghana’s economic trajectory, citing continued fiscal discipline, infrastructure investment and strong growth prospects in the ICT sector. “Together, we will build a prosperous company that benefits all shareholders and embraces the promise of the future,” he affirmed.

NCA Convenes Ghana’s Second and Final National Preparatory Meeting ahead of the 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27)

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has convened Ghana’s Second and Final National Preparatory Meeting as part of the country’s build-up to the 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27). The three-day meeting, which is expected to take place at the NCA Tower in Accra from 31st March to 2nd April, 2026, will provide a platform for stakeholders to review the preliminary positions adopted at the First National Preparatory Meeting held in April, 2025. It also consolidates Ghana’s positions ahead of the 3rd Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Telecommunication Union (ATU) Preparatory Meetings. In his welcome address, the Director General of the NCA, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, underscored the importance of the engagement noting its national, regional, and global significance. He explained that the meeting formed part of the consultative processes required by law and highlighted the four-year planning cycle that characterised the World Radiocommunication Conference. He further indicated that as part of preparations for WRC-27, the Authority was placing increased emphasis on deepening industry participation and strengthening stakeholder input. Emphasising the importance of collaboration among all spectrum users, Rev. Ing. Fianko stated: ‘‘Your presence here today is a strong testament to the shared commitment of our stakeholders across the communications ecosystem to shape Ghana’s strategic voice in global spectrum governance. As we are all aware, the radio frequency spectrum is very important in today’s digital interconnected world. It underpins virtually every facet of our modern life from mobile communications [and] broadband connectivity to broadcasting, satellite services, aviation, maritime operation and scientific research.’’ He added that given the finite nature of the spectrum, its efficient, equitable, and interference-free use required coordinated global management, an objective achieved through the World Radiocommunication Conference convened under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Providing further context, the Deputy Director of the Engineering Division, Mrs. Naa Amorkor Asihene, delivered a comprehensive overview of the WRC-27 preparatory process, including the WRC cycle, the role of the ATU, and key agenda areas. She noted that the Conference played a critical role in ensuring the efficient use of spectrum resources while also promoting global harmonisation, economies of scale, and equipment interoperability.  Mrs. Asihene emphasised that the outcomes of the meeting would significantly impact Ghana’s contributions at the final ECOWAS and ATU preparatory sessions. Encouraging active and meaningful participation, the Director-General reiterated the importance of stakeholder collaboration. ‘‘As we prepare as a country for WRC-27, it is important that we put together coherent positions on the various agenda items. Your deliberations over the coming days are of critical importance. They must be informed by both technical expertise and strategic foresight. Your insights will therefore play a pivotal role in refining Ghana’s positions across the various agenda items,’’ he stated. Participants at the meeting included industry players and representatives from key institutions such as the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, the Ghana Maritime Authority, Next-Gen Infraco (NGIC) as well as academia. Key discussion areas over the three-day meetings include: Fixed-Satellite Services, Broadcasting-Satellite Services, Mobile and Radiolocation Services, Mobile-Satellite Services, Science Services, and Article 22 of the ITU Radio Regulations. Held every three (3) to four (4) years, the World Radiocommunication Conference is organised by the Radiocommunication Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R). It serves as the principal global forum for reviewing and where necessary revising the Radio Regulations, the international treaty governing the use of the radio frequency spectrum, as well as geostationary and non-geostationary satellite orbits.

MTN Group Surpasses 307 Million Customers in 2025, Posts Strong Financial Results

MTN Group has crossed the 300 million customer mark, serving more than 307 million voice subscribers, 172 million data users, and 70 million Mobile Money customers across 16 markets as at 31 December 2025 ,a milestone the Group had set as a central target under its Ambition 2025 strategy. The achievement came alongside a strong financial performance for the year, with service revenue rising by nearly a quarter to R218 billion, underpinned by improved macroeconomic conditions and robust commercial execution across key markets. MTN Nigeria and MTN Ghana were standout performers, growing service revenue by 54.9% and 35.9% respectively in constant-currency terms. MTN South Africa posted a 2.0% increase in service revenue, maintaining momentum in what remains a mature and competitive market. Earnings before interest, tax and amortization (before once-off items) rose by more than a third in constant currency to R98.5 billion, supported by expense efficiencies of R3.6 billion. Adjusted headline earnings per share climbed 67%, while basic EPS swung from a loss in 2024 to a profit in 2025. Speaking on this,Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita credited the milestone to consistent investment and execution. “In the final year of our Ambition 2025 strategy, we were proud to have exceeded the 300 million customers milestone in line with our priority to deepen digital and financial inclusion,” he said. Data traffic across the network accelerated by 27%, with average monthly data use per customer increasing to 12.5GB from 10.8GB. On the fintech side, transaction volumes grew 15% to more than 23 billion, with total transaction value exceeding US$500 billion for the year. MTN invested R38 billion in network capacity, coverage and quality during the period, expanding broadband access to more than 94% of the population across its markets while cutting the average cost of data by 14%. The Group declared a dividend of 500 cents per share, up from 345 cents in 2024, and announced a R6 billion share buyback programme as part of an enhanced shareholder remuneration framework. Looking ahead, MTN unveiled Ambition 2030, its new strategic framework built around three platforms :Connectivity, Fintech, and Digital Infrastructure ,with artificial intelligence positioned as a key lever for growth. “We are hugely excited about Africa’s potential and are well positioned to leverage our scale, footprint and brand leadership to capture the significant structural growth opportunities identified,” Mupita said.

MTN GH Partners HMD Global to Launch GHS 899 Smartphone

MTN Ghana, in partnership with HMD Global, has launched the HMD Arc, an affordable 4G-enabled smartphone designed to help millions of Ghanaians transition from basic 2G feature phones to devices that unlock the full benefits of the digital world. In a statement released, it explained that this move forms part of the company’s drive to expand digital access nationwide while also supporting the migration of customers to faster and more reliable 4G technology. According to the statement, the device is meant to bridge the affordability gap with a price point set at GHS 899 . Additionally, customers who purchase the device will enjoy 2.5GB of data every month for 6 months. The company added that the smartphone is designed with first-time smartphone users in mind, and will have features such as internet browsing, app access, and enhanced network performance enabling users to tap into digital platforms and services that are increasingly central to everyday life. MTN GH Launches Sim Swap Self-Service

MTN Ghana has launched Sim Swap Self-Service, a move aimed at enabling customers to replace their SIM cards whenever and wherever they may be, eliminating the need to visit a physical service centre for assistance. In a statement released on March,19,2026 , the telecommunication giant explained that this move forms part of its efforts to ensure customer satisfaction through the delivery of convenient, secure and innovative digital solutions. Speaking at the launch which was held simultaneously across six regions , Chief Customer Experience Officer, Jemima Kotei Walsh, explained that the move will not only give customers greater control but also see to a significant reduction in queues and waiting times at various MTN offices across the country. “The need for SIM swaps has always been high, with MTN Ghana handling roughly 250,000 of such requests each month across its service centers. The self-service will ease these burdens by reducing lines, waiting times and giving customers more control and flexibility over their accounts. Before the full rollout, a pilot program had already demonstrated the value of the initiative with more than 18,000 customers successfully swapping their SIMs independently or with very little help at MTN branches. This success was more than just numbers, it was proof of digital empowerment and a shining example of customer-driven innovation in action,” she explained The Director of Consumer Affairs at the National Communications Authority (NCA), Beatrice Hemen also praised the solution,emphasizing that telecom users frequently report SIM swap concerns. She added that the initiative will give customers greater choice and help shape Ghana’s telecommunications ecosystem. “The Authority consistently receives a significant number of SIM swap-related complaints. Empowering customers to handle the process themselves marks a major step forward,” she commented. The statement also highlighted that the new service allows users to replace lost, stolen, or damaged SIM cards quickly even from outside Ghana ensuring minimal disruption to mobile services. It also introduces advanced security features, including biometric facial recognition, to verify users and prevent fraud. MTN GH also noted that Customers can access the service via the myMTN App or by dialing *1333#, making the process fast, simple, and secure. The launch concluded with a live demonstration, showcasing just how easy it is for customers to complete a SIM swap independently.
