The National Communications Authority(NCA) has announced the amendment of the Wholesale Electronic Communications Infrastructure (Telecommunications) Licence issued to Next Gen Infraco Limited (NGIC), stripping the NGIC of the exclusive right of operating as the sole provider of Ghana’s wholesale 5G infrastructure effective immediately.
In a statement released on July 15,2026, the authority explained that the move is aimed at ensuring the better satisfaction of public interest through competition.
“As the telecommunications market has evolved, however; the Authority has concluded that the public interest is better served by a competitive wholesale 5G market that promotes investment, innovation. network resilience, service quality and wider access to advanced communications services.” NCA stated
NCA added that the amendment is within its legal mandate and falls in line with Article 6.1.2 of NGIC’s Licence and section 14 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).
NCA also assured the public that the decision comes after a careful consultation with NGIC adding that NGIC was given the opportunity to make oral representations during the decision making process.
The Authority however added that “the amendment relates only to that specific condition and does not affect the validity of the remainder of the Licence. NGIC therefore retains all its other rights and obligations under the Licence, including its spectrum assignment.”
The move reverses NCA’s earlier decision granting NGIC the sole right to own and operate wholesale 5G infrastructure in Ghana.
