Ghana Water Ltd Dismisses Social Media Claims of Sewage Contamination,Describes Viral Video as False and Misleading

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that a burst pipeline inside an overflowing sewage chamber is contaminating its potable water supply, describing the allegations as false, misleading, and without any factual or technical basis. This comes after the circulation of a video on social media purporting to show a Ghana Water pipeline inside a sewage chamber allowing sewage to enter the company’s drinking water distribution system. In its response to this, GWL explained that following assessments by its engineers and technical experts, it was confirmed that the pipeline shown in the video is not a Ghana Water Ltd pipeline but rather a trunk sewer inlet pipeline which is designed to convey wastewater into the sewage chamber as part of the sewerage system. The Utility Company also added that the assessment also revealed that that there is no Ghana Water pipeline within the sewage chamber and no burst, damaged, or exposed GWL pipeline at the location hence describing the allegation as entirely unfounded. Ghana Water Ltd went ahead to assure the public that its potable water infrastructure is completely separate from sewerage systems and is designed and maintained to prevent any interaction between drinking water and wastewater. The company added then added that water supplied by GWL undergoes rigorous treatment, continuous operational monitoring, and routine laboratory testing to ensure compliance with the Ghana Standards Authority’s drinking water quality standards. GWL hence urged the public to disregard the misleading video and rely only on verified information from the company’s official communication channels.

Ghana Water Ltd to Undertake 24-Hour Planned Maintenance Works at Dodowa Booster Station

The Management of Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced the temporary shut down and closure of the Dodowa Booster Station to undertake a scheduled maintenance . In a statement released on July 7,2026, GWL stated that the closure of the station will only be for 24 hours on Thursday ,July 9 and is aimed at improving the operational efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of the water supply system. The Utility Company explained that as a result of the closure customers in East Legon, Adjiringanor, Ashaley Botwe, Madina, Adenta, Oyarifa, Frafraha, Agbogba, Haatso, Atomic, Ashongman, Dome, Dodowa, and all adjoining communities served by the Dodowa Booster Station will experience an interruption in water supply . GWL then urged residents and customers in these communities to to store sufficient water ahead of the planned shutdown and use the available supply judiciously throughout the maintenance period. GWL then assured residents that’s its engineers are actively working to find a solution to the challenge and hence pleased with them to exercise patience.

Ghana Water Ltd Opens Weija Dam Spillways as Water Level Exceeds Maximum Operating Capacity

  The Management of Ghana Water Limited has announced the controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam, after the water level rose above the maximum operating level of 48 feet. In a press release dated 27th May 2026, the company said all spill gates of the dam have been opened to allow for the controlled release of excess water in order to safeguard the structural integrity and safety of the dam. “The public may recall that every year during the rainy season, and anytime the water level exceeds 45 feet, Ghana Water Ltd undertakes controlled spilling operations to prevent undue pressure on the dam and avert any potential disaster,” the statement noted. Ghana Water Ltd further disclosed that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast continued torrential rains upstream, warning that increased inflows into the dam area are expected. The company said the spilling exercise will continue until the water level recedes to a safe operating level, adding that the process may persist for several months depending on rainfall patterns and inflow volumes. The company is urging all persons living along the course of the river downstream of the dam to evacuate from vulnerable areas immediately to forestall any eventuality and ensure the safety of lives and property. Ghana Water Ltd also disclosed that the National Disaster Management Organisation and the various District Assemblies have been informed, with plans underway to clear structures and obstructions hindering the free flow of water into the sea. The company called on relevant authorities to act as early as practicable to minimise the risk of flooding and protect affected communities. The public has been urged to cooperate fully with all emergency directives and advisories issued by relevant state institutions.

Ghana Bans Takeaway Packs Products Effective 1st January 2027 — EPA

Ghana has announced a comprehensive ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products, popularly known as styrofoam or takeaway packs, effective 1st January 2027. The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) issued the directive on 25th May 2026, following a policy announcement made by President John Dramani Mahama on 5th June 2025 during the World Environment Day celebration, where he declared the ban as a critical measure to combat plastic pollution and safeguard the environment. The ban covers all forms of expanded polystyrene foam products used for human and commercial activities including food packaging containers and takeaway packs, disposable cups and plates, foam packs used by restaurants, chop bars and food vendors, ceiling and insulation materials, foam mattresses and bedding materials, as well as packaging and cushioning materials. Medical, scientific, laboratory and diagnostic polystyrene products are however exempted from the ban. The EPA has directed all manufacturers, importers, distributors and users of polystyrene products to begin transitioning to safer, reusable, recyclable and environmentally sustainable alternatives ahead of the January 2027 deadline. During the transition period, the Authority will undertake nationwide stakeholder engagements, public education and technical consultations while strengthening compliance monitoring and enforcement preparedness. The EPA added that it will collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, port authorities, customs officials and industry regulators to ensure effective nationwide enforcement of the ban upon commencement.

Water Supply Disruption Hits Western Accra: GWCL Moves to Address The Challenge

The Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited(GWCL) has announced a temporary disruption in its water supply due to some parts of western Accra due to some technical challenges affecting the operations of its Water Treatment Plant. In a statement released on Wednesday, May 14,2026, the utility company added that as a result of the challenge members in the Dansoman, Mamprobi, Mataheko, Laterbiokorshie, Korle-bu, La Paz, MacCarthy Hill, Gbawe, Mallam, Tesano, Darkuman, North Kaneshie, Dome, Achimota, Anyaa, Ablekuma and surrounding communities may experience erratic water supply and low water pressure. GWCL however assured the affected communities that its engineers and technical team are actively working to bring an end to the challenge as soon as possible. “Management wishes to assure the public that engineers and technical teams of Ghana Water Ltd are working assiduously to rectify the challenges and restore normal water supply as early as practicable.” The statement said It then apologized to affected customers for the inconveniences caused while’s also urging them to store water anytime there is flow in their communities to help manage the temporal disruption.

Fan Milk PLC to Pay GHS 0.11 Final Dividend Per Share for 2025 Financial Year

  Fan Milk PLC has announced the payment of a final dividend of GHS 0.11 per share for the 2025 financial year, subject to shareholder approval at the company’s upcoming Annual General Meeting. According to a press release filed with the Ghana Stock Exchange, shareholders registered in the books of Fan Milk at the close of business on Thursday 14 May 2026 will qualify for the final dividend with the register of shareholders set to be closed from Friday 15 May 2026 to Monday 18 May 2026, both days inclusive. The ex-dividend date has also been set as Tuesday 12 May 2026.The dividend of GHS 0.11 per share is scheduled to be paid on Tuesday 30 June 2026. Fan Milk PLC’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 18 May 2026 at Wesley Towers, Accra at 11am, where directors will formally recommend the dividend payment to shareholders for approval.

Ghana Water Company Attributes Tema, Accra East Supply Crisis to Power Instability, Weed Influx at Kpong Plant

The Management of the Ghana Water Company Ltd has moved to clarify the cause of water supply challenges currently affecting the Eastern part of Accra particularly Tema and its environs. In a statement released on Tuesday,April 28,2026,the utility company attributed the primary cause of the supply challenge to the the ongoing instability in power supply to the Kpong Water Treatment Plant and associated booster stations noting that the Plant supplies a significant portion of potable water to both the Tema and Accra East Regions and hence the challenge. Ghana Water Company Ltd also added that majority water of its operations are heavily dependent and reliant on reliable power supply and electricity hence a disruption and fluctuations in power supply directly affects its operations and its ability to supply water to the citizenry. The Utility Company further added that the occasional influx of aquatic weeds at the Kpong intake pointhas further compounded the situation,leading to unusually large volumes of weeds, increased clogging of intake screens, and restrictions in raw water abstraction for treatment. The Company then proceeded to offer its sincerest apologies to the populace adding that it is actively engaging its technical team to bring an end to challenge. It also added that it is actively engaging VRA, GRIDCo, ECG, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the speedy repair, restoration, and stabilization of constant and consistent power supply to enable full water production and normal distribution.
