The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, together with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has announced the commencement of final phase of the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade (K1–K2 Project) and the transformer upgrade at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation from July 20, 2026.
In a statement released on July 16, 2026, the Ministry explained that the projects form part of government’s commitment to strengthening electricity infrastructure to meet the growing energy needs of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.
It noted that the ageing 19-kilometre single-circuit line connecting the Anwomaso (K2) and Kumasi (K1) substations, though reliable for many years, has become increasingly overloaded amid rapid population growth and commercial expansion in the city and hence the need for the upgrade.
The Ministry also added that, the K1–K2 Project will boost transmission capacity between the two substations by more than doubling its capacity from the existing 364MVA single-circuit transmission line to a modern double circuit line of 2 x 488MVA (978MVA), making the transmission line more reliable, resilient and efficient in electricity supply to Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.
The Ministry also disclosed that the project has reached its final and most critical stage, with approximately 90% of foundation works and 67% of tower assembly works completed as of July 16, 2026 with the remaining works involving dismantling the existing transmission line, erecting new transmission towers, and stringing new conductors.
On planned outages, the Ministry explained that the existing transmission line must be de-energised to ensure the safe execution of these technical activities. As a result, customers served by the Kumasi (K1) and Anwomaso (K2) substations may experience temporary and localised interruptions to electricity supply during scheduled construction periods.
The statement added that GRIDCo will simultaneously replace one of the existing 66MVA transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation with a new 145MVA transformer, a move expected to significantly increase transmission capacity, improve operational flexibility, reduce loading on existing equipment, and further enhance reliability of supply across Kumasi and surrounding communities.
The Ministry then urged residents to stay away from designated construction areas and comply fully with safety instructions issued by project personnel throughout the construction period.
