GPRTU Warns Commercial Drivers Against Overcharging Passengers

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, has cautioned commercial drivers against charging passengers fares beyond the approved 8 percent increase.

Speaking on the Public Sphere on Radio Univers, Samuel Amoah said most drivers involved in overcharging are “floating drivers” who do not operate from designated stations and are therefore not affiliated with any transport union.

He said the GPRTU has engaged the Ministry of Transport and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen enforcement of the approved fares.

“It came out that most of the drivers that are doing that are the floating drivers that don’t go to the stations. So, we also sent a message to the Transport Ministry and we had a meeting with them yesterday, and we agreed to come out with a team ,a task force comprising the GPRTU and National Security.” Amoah stated

Samuel Amoah further warned that drivers who overcharge passengers could face legal action under the new LI.

“The law ,the new LI there is a regulation in there that if you overcharge and the police get hold of you, you’ll be sent to court and you’ll be fined or sentenced to one month in prison.” Amoah added

He added that commercial transport operators who do not belong to any recognised transport union could also be arrested and prosecuted.

“If you’re doing commercial transport in Ghana and you don’t fall under any of the unions, you are to be arrested by the police. And when you are taken to court, you can be fined not more than 25 penalty units, or sentenced to one month in prison, or both.”
