The Head of the Statistics Office at the Currency Management Department of the Bank of Ghana, Dinah Bonzi, has warned the public against the use of Ghana cedi banknotes to make and sell money bouquets, reiterating that the act constitutes an offence punishable by law.
The Bank of Ghana, in a public notice issued on July 14, 2026, barred the use of currency notes and coins as decorations including money bouquets, jewellery, and other artistic creations, citing the Currency Act, 1964 (Act 242).
Speaking during a media engagement, Bonzi reiterated that persons who engage in, promote, or facilitate the misuse of the currency will face legal action.
“Persons found engaging in, aiding, promoting, or facilitating such acts will be arrested and prosecuted by the appropriate law enforcement agencies. The Ghana cedi is a legal tender of the Republic of Ghana and must be treated with respect,” Bonzi stated.
She further urged the public to desist from handling banknotes in ways that could damage or deface them, stressing that the currency must be handled with dignity.
“The misuse or abuse of the currency is an offence and may attract sanctions under the law. Let us all handle the Ghana cedi with dignity,” Bonzi added.
The warning follows the arrest of seven individuals by the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Police Service over the use of the currency in money bouquets.
