Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, has hinted that the union is likely to increase transport fares by at least 25% amid ongoing negotiations with the government.
In an engagement with the media, Samuel Amoah explained that although the union is yet to reach a final agreement with the government,with a deal expected to be reached tomorrow ,a fare increase of at least 25% remains likely.
“Tomorrow, hopefully, both leadership of the GPRTU and GRTCC are meeting the transport ministry. Tomorrow, we take a final decision on the proposal on the table, and I believe increments will be announced after the agreement. We are still looking for 30%, but we don’t know what will happen tomorrow it may come down, but we are not looking at anything less than 25%,” Samuel Amoah stated.
Samuel Amoah also explained the rationale behind the proposed increment, arguing that an upward revision in the cost of components such as spare parts, insurance, DVLA charges, and fuel prices makes an increase difficult to overlook.
“All the components have gone up. We were talking about the cost of spare parts some parts have come down, but the vehicles we use for our business have not gotten any cheaper. Insurance policies have also gone up, as well as DVLA charges and fuel prices. So that justifies our 30 percent request,” Samuel Amoah explained.
The comments follow a proposed 30% increase in transport fares by the GPRTU, which was subsequently halted by government pending discussions and consultation.
