PMSU-VALCO Distances Itself from Demonstration, Pegs True Cost of VALCO Revival at $700 Million

The Professional and Management Staff Union (PMSU) of VALCO has distanced itself from the ongoing demonstration organized against the search for a strategic investor for the Volta Aluminium Company.

In a statement released on July 27, 2026, PMSU-VALCO, which represents Assistant Managers, Managers and Area Managers of the company, explained that it has no knowledge of, involvement in, or association with the demonstration, noting that it was not consulted or engaged in any form prior to its planning or announcement.

Whatever position is being advanced through this demonstration, it is not the position of the professional and management staff of VALCO, and it must not be represented to the public, to Government, or to prospective investors as such,” the statement read.

The Union stressed VALCO’s needs for a strategic investor, noting that the search has been ongoing for more than five years while the plant’s condition has deteriorated.

It aligned itself with the position of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on behalf of Government, and urged Government to press the process to conclusion without further delay.

PMSU-VALCO however rejected the claim that $60 million would be sufficient to restore the company to efficient operation, describing much of the plant as obsolete rather than merely worn.

Restoring VALCO to efficient, competitive operation is not a repair exercise. It is a rebuild,” the Union stated, adding that its own assessment, based on direct working knowledge of the asset base, puts the requirement at $700 million or more.

A $60 million intervention would not make VALCO efficient. It would consume public funds, deliver a short reprieve, and return the Company to the same position with the intervening years lost and the plant in worse condition still,” the statement added.

PMSU-VALCO then cautioned that a demonstration organised without reference to the management body, and in apparent tension with the stated position of Government, signals instability to the very investors the company needs.
